The Crossing

In Deniz's words

The Story

We meet at Kadıköy pier with a glass of tea and wait for the ferry with the gulls. On the crossing to Europe we head for the open back deck, where the wind and the skyline do most of the work.

I won't ask you to pose much. I'd rather follow along, notice the small things and catch you laughing at a gull. We take a short walk along the Eminönü waterfront, then ride back, usually with softer light and more relaxed faces. Your photos read like a short story of your day on the Bosphorus.

I'm Deniz

Photographer · Istanbul, Türkiye

Honest, documentary portraits that read like a real story.

I spent eight years as a news photographer. I watch closely, wait, and photograph things as they really are. Now I do it on the ferry, with travellers at their most relaxed.

It was grey and windy and Deniz loved it. The photos feel like a short film of our day on the Bosphorus.

No posing at all. Just us laughing at the gulls with tea in hand. Exactly what we wanted.

Deniz notices everything. Some of our favourite photos are moments we didn't know were happening.
